【 摘 要 】
The present work aims to analyze the influence of the New Institutional Economics on the precious stone production chain in the middle high Uruguay region. In this sense, Brazil is one of the highlights in mineral production, having in its territory quantity and variety of precious stones. However, it is in the mines and stoning sites that present informality and find obstacles to development. This is a qualitative case study, developed through a descriptive approach, in which data collection occurred through a semi-structured script, including interviews. Data were analyzed by the content analysis technique, and the categories were defined a priori. The results show that the precious stones production chain is important for the regional economy; however, they reveal that there is informality throughout the process and inappropriate use of resources. The activity develops under irregular conditions regarding the bureaucratic processes, tax and fiscal burden. Uncertainties and limited rationality were observed in existing transactions as well as opportunistic behavior among agents and institutions, which weakens the precious stones production chain. However, the aspects are not exhaustive.
