【 摘 要 】

Between 1800 and 1801 David painted Napoleon Crossing the Alps (also known as Napoleon at the Saint Bernard Pass). The painting depicts General Bonaparte riding a horse, which recalls the exploits of Hannibal and Charlemagne. This iconography is not new: the equestrian portraits of generals, princes, kings and emperors date back to the Italian Renaissance period, and are inspired in the public sculptures raised in Imperial Rome, particularly that of emperor Marcus Aurelius. During the Age of Absolutism, royal portraits on prancing horses, which had a precise symbolic meaning in the books of Emblematics, became remarkably successful. The canvas by David constitutes a revision of that iconography. Furthermore, it adds a historic dimension to the model. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the equestrian portrait would survive –firstly, from nationalistic and romantic perspectives, and later through Fascist movements and historic cinema. So for centuries the equestrian portrait has been an effective image of power, particularly military power.
