【 摘 要 】
This paper will discuss the women’s presence in Rio de Janeiro’s carnival through the first decades of republican regime (1889-1910). This period offers a great possibility to understand the tensions and the struggles that the female presence generated, oftentimes contrary to the expectations of the patriarchal society. For this purpose, we shall analyze the case of 1891’s carnival, the year of the promulgation of the first republican constitution of Brazil. Then, we’ll investigate the female presence in the carnivalesque groups, seeking to contribute to the enlargement of the historical knowledge about the period and about the women’s action in the public space of the city.
