Unfulfilled promise? A critical balance of theories of political change and their applicability to Latin America

【 摘 要 】

This article offers a critical analysis of the various theoretical focuses that have, since the mid-twentieth century, attempted to interpret the paths along which the American subcontinent would have to pass in order to achieve democracy and economic development.It begins by describing and questioning the first generation (developmentalist) and second generation (dependency) theories. It then concentrates on the intellectual impact of the processes of transition toward democracy in various parts of Latin America and the appearance of medium range theories which attempted to show the rationality of these occurrences. Finally, it sets out some of the challenges faced by the most recent approaches to democratictransition in light of the theoretical framework mapped out in the course of the article.
