【 摘 要 】

The witch-hunt in the Modern Age put an end to the lives of about four hundred people, most of them women, in the Catalan area. They were accused of being servants of the Devil, killing children and beasts and causing floods and hailstorms that ruined the harvests. They were used as escape goats of a society in crisis, most represented the antiparadigm of the model women. Midwives, knowing about herbs, sorcerers, fortune-tellers… they were ultimately considered such an extreme social danger that civil courts prosecuiting them did not hesitate to hire witch hunters to identify and arrest them. Some of the practices they carried out were related to ancient pre-Christian cults of female deities connected to fertility, the moon and the flowing of waters.
