【 摘 要 】

Thesouthernblack-backedgull(Larusdominicanus)isacommonspeciesthroughoutNewZealand,andhasasignificantpresenceinAucklandCity.LargecoloniesarepresentonRangitotoIslandonly8kmfromthecity’scentre.Theproximityofthesecoloniestotheanthropogenicresourcesofthecitymayhaveinfluencedbreedinglocationsandlocalpopulations.Usingfielddatafromthe2012/13breedingperiod,wecomparethecurrentstatusofthebreedingpopulationonRangitotoIslandwithhistoricaldatacollatedfromliterature.TheRangitotopopulationexhibitedrapidgrowththroughouttheearly20thcentury,apatternattributedtoenvironmentalchangesassociatedwithEuropeansettlementanddevelopment.Sincethe1980s,thecolonysizeshavedeclined,achangethatisconsistentwithothergullpopulationsbothnationallyandglobally.Thedriverofthepopulationchangesislikelytobetheavailabilityoffoodandtheexpansionofvegetationintothecolonies.Humandisturbanceandpredationarediscountedasimpactingonpopulationchange.
