Thehihi(Notiomystiscincta)isasmallthreatenedpasserineendemictoNewZealand,forwhichfewmethodsareknownforageingandsexingwildunbandedindividuals.WemonitoredhihionTiritiriMatangiIslandover3years,studyingmoultandothersexingandageingtechniques.Juvenilehihibeforetheirfirstpartialmoultcanbesexedbythewhitebasesofprimarycovertsonmales,whichappearbrowninfemales.Afterjuvenilesundergotheirfirstpartialmoult,theyappearsimilartoadults;howeverjuvenilemalesretainoldfeathersintheirprimarycoverts,alulae,orsometimesgreatercovertsorinnerprimaries,whileadultsundergoacompletemoult.Thesepatternscanbedifficulttoseeinjuvenilefemales,butwearofjuveniletailsismuchgreaterthaninadultsatanygiventimeofyear,makingageingoffemalesreliable.Moultintheouterprimariesandsecondariesinautumnalsoindicateadultbirds.Thisinformationshouldhelpinformfuturetranslocationsandattemptstomonitorviabilityofwildpopulations.Finally,wealsocommentonalternativedefinitionsforageingcriteriafromMelville(2011),basednotonsuspectedbirth-dates,butonappearanceofplumageinhand.
