【 摘 要 】
Discriminantfunctionanalysis(DFA)iswidelyusedtodeterminesexinthefieldfrommorphologicalmeasurementsofbirdspecieswithmonomorphicplumage.Sexualdimorphismwasexaminedinblackpetrels(Procellariaparkinsoni)using7externalmeasurementsofadultbirdsbreedingonGreatBarrierIsland,NewZealand.Malesweresignificantlylargerthanfemalesinabsolutevaluesofallmeasurementsexceptfortarsus.TwostepwiseDFAmodelsweredeveloped.Thefirstusedall7parameters,whilethesecondmodelusedonly6parametersinordertoincreasesamplesize.Modeloneandtwoshowedan88and82%classificationsuccess,respectively,mostlikelyduetothehighoverlapinmeasurementsbetweenmalesandfemales.Thesecanonicalfunctionswerenotaccurateenoughforfieldsurveys,butmaybeimprovedusingalargerandmorerepresentativesamplesize.
