Kiwi(Apteryxspp.)arethemostvocaloftheratites.Ofthe5Apteryxspeciesonly2havepreviouslybeensubjecttodetailedvocalanalysis:theNorthIslandbrownkiwi(A.mantelli)andthelittlespottedkiwi(A.owenii).Thispaperdescribesthevocalisationsofthegreatspottedkiwi(A.haastii),thelargestoftheApteryxspecies.Acousticrecorderswereinstallednearthebreedingdensitesof7greatspottedkiwipairsresidinginHawdonValley,CanterburybetweenNovember2012andMarch2013.Atotalof133whistlevocalisationsfrom10individualsweresubjecttodetailedtemporalandspectralanalysis.Maleandfemalesyllableswerefoundtobesexuallydimorphic;syllablesinmalecallstendedtobelongerandmorehighlypitchedthantheirfemalecounterparts.Despitethisdimorphism,patternsofintra-callvariationwereconsistentbetweenthesexes.Itappearsthatintra-callvariationisatraitwhichvariesmarkedlywithintheApteryxgenus.
