Weuseddatafrom3sourcestoexaminethepopulationsizeandtrendofSalvin’salbatrosses(Thalassarchesalvini)breedingonProclamationIsland,BountyIslands,NewZealand.Island-widecountsofbreedingbirdsduringincubationresultedintotalsthatdeclined14%,from3065in1997to2634in2004.Acountofbreedingalbatrossesoverpartoftheislandin2011indicatedafurtherdeclineof13%between2004and2011,andanoveralldeclineof30%between1997and2011.AdditionalcountsonpartofDepotIslandindicatedadeclineof10%inthenumbersofbreedingpairsbetween2004and2011.Dailyobservationsof70nestsshowedthathatchingspannedtheperiodfrom5to21November1997,withamedianof15November,apartfrom5eggsthathadnotyethatchedbytheendofthestudyperiod.BasedonthebandingandrecaptureofchicksbandedinMarch1985annualsurvivalwasestimatedat0.926.ThescaleofthedeclineestimatedinthispopulationhasresultedintheconservationstatusofSalvin’salbatrossbeingupgradedfromnationallyvulnerabletonationallycritical.
