Acupuncture Plus Dry Needling, an Effective Treatment Method for Chronic Neck Pain

【 摘 要 】

Background:Inrecentyears,acupuncturehasattractedmuchattentionasacomplementarytherapyinthemanagementofchronicneckpain,butthedefiniteeffectofthismethodhasnotyetbeenproveninreducingpainandimprovingfunction.Objectives:Thisstudywasconductedtoevaluatetheeffectsofacupunctureplusdryneedlinginrelievingchronicneckpainanditslastingeffectsforupto3monthsaftertreatment.PatientsandMethods:Thirty-eightpatientswithchronicneckpainwereincludedinthisstudy.Eachpatientreceived10minutesofacupunctureintwoforms(acupointsandtriggerpointneedling),twiceaweekfor6weeks.TheacupointswereGB20,GB21,BL10,BL12,BL18,DU14,SI11,andSI13.Simultaneously,triggerpointsintrapeziusmusclesalsotookneedle.Theneckdisabilityindex(NDI)andneckpainanddisabilityscale(NPDS)questionnaireswerecompletedbythepatientsbeforeperforminginterventionandagainat6weeksand3monthsaftertheintervention,andtheobtaineddatawerestatisticallyanalyzed.Results:MeanNPDSscoreuponadmissionwas56.3±16.1,whichdroppedto20.9±19.4attheendof6weeksoftreatment(Plt;0.001).Attheendof3months,thescorereached20.3±26.6;althoughrecoverywassignificantcomparedtothestartoftreatment,itwasnotsignificantcomparedtotheendof6weeks(P=0.84).MeanNDIscoreatpre-interventionwas20.3±7.5,whichreducedto7.3±6.7after6weeksoftreatment(Plt;0.001).After3months,itdecreasedto5.9±8.4;andalthoughrecoverywassignificant(Plt;0.001)comparedtothetimeofadmission,itwasnotstatisticallysignificantcomparedtotheendof6weeksoftreatment(P=0.27).Conclusions:Acupunctureplusdryneedlingisaneffectiveshort-aswellasmid-termtreatmentmethodforchronicneckpain.Theresultofthisstudyseemstobethecornerstoneoffurtherresearches,whichevaluatetheneweffectivetreatmentsforchronicneckpain.
