Ten-year Comparison of the Prevalence of Thyroid Cancer in the Neck With Retrosternal Thyroid in Shahid Beheshti and Ayatollah Rouhani Hospitals in Babol, Iran

【 摘 要 】

Background:Anydeviationinthenormaldescentofthethyroidglandcanleadtoectopicthyroid.Inthisstudyten-yearcomparisonoftheprevalenceofcervicalthyroidcancerwithretrosternalthyroidwasperformed.Objectives:Byknowingprevalenceofthediseaseactionsmaybeperformedtoknowtheriskfactorsassociatedwiththedisease.ThepurposeofthisstudywastocomparetheprevalenceofcervicalthyroidcancerwithretrosternalthyroidinShahidBeheshtiandAyatollahRouhaniHospitalsinBabol,Iran,during2000-2010.MaterialsandMethods:Thiscross-sectionalstudywasperformedon158patientsreferredtoShahidBeheshtiandAyatollahRouhaniHospitalsinBabolCity,Iran,during10years(from2000-2010).Demographiccharacteristics,smoking,familyhistoryofthyroidcancer,thesignsandsymptomsandpathologyreportswerecollectedinachecklistformat.Results:Fromatotalof158patientswiththyroidcancer,144caseswerediagnosedwithcervicalthyroidand14casesdiagnosedwithretrosternalthyroid.Inbothgroups,dyspneaandhoarsenesswerethemostprevalentsymptoms.Thepathologyreportshowedthatinthecervicalthyroid,benigncasesweremorethanmalignantcasesbutinretrosternalthyroid,theoppositehappened.Conclusions:Theprevalenceofcervicalthyroidwas91.1%andtheprevalenceofretrosternalthyroidwasabout8.9%.Theprevalenceratesofmalignancyinthecervicalandretrosternalthyroidwere34.7%and21.4%,respectively.
