Prevalence of Neural Tube Defects in Yasuj, South West Iran

【 摘 要 】

Background:Neuraltubedefects(NTDs),anencephaly,meningocele,andmeningoencephalocele,areofthemostcommoncongenitalanomaliesofthecentralnervoussystemcausedbydefectsinclosureoftheneuralcordinthethirdandfourthgestationalweeks.Objectives:WeaimedtoinvestigatetheprevalenceofNTDsamongthetotalbirthsinclinicsundersupervisionofYasujUniversityofmedicalsciences,Yasuj,southwestIran.PatientsandMethods:AllnewbornswithNTDswhoweredeliveredinobstetricsandgynecologyhospitalwardsofYasujUniversityofmedicalsciences,southwestIran,fromApril2005toMarch2011wereincluded.ThemotherswithNTDdeliverieswerealsocomparedwiththemotherswithphysicallyhealthydeliveriesforbloodindices.Afteraninterviewaformwasfilledregardingtheirdemographicinformationsuchasmaternalage,address,gestationalage,mother#039;sbloodgroup,bloodindices,andduedateofdelivery.Results:Ofthe14034infantswhowereborninhospitalsofYasujuniversityofmedicalsciences,southwestIran,duringthe6yearsperiodofthisstudy,68(36girlsand24boys;P=0.46)hadNTDs.59(86.8%)infantshadanencephalyand9(13.2%)hadothertypesofNTDs.TheprevalenceofNTDswas4.84/1000birthduringthe6yearsperiod.Nosignificantdifferencewasfoundbetweenthegroupsregardingtheotherdemographicvariablesandbloodindices.Conclusions:TheprevalenceofNTDsinYasuj,ismuchhighercomparedwithpreviousreports.Thiswarningsignshouldbebeardinmindbypolicymakerstoaddresstherelatedetiologicalfactorsandpreventionplans.
