Assessment of Serum Leptin and Thyroid Hormone Levels among Depressed Women

【 摘 要 】

Objective:Thereisasubstantialamountofevidencesuggestingthatalterationinsomehormonesisassociatedwithdepression.Theaimofthestudywastoassesstheserumlevelofthyroidhormonesandleptininpatientswithdepression.SubjectsandMethods:Inthiscase-controlstudy,63patientswithdifferentdegreesofdepressionand69healthy,ageandsexmatchedcontrolsubjectswereselected.TheBeckDepressionInventorywasusedtoclassifythedegreeofdepressionintomild,moderate,andsevere.ThelevelofLeptin,thyrotropin(TSH),thyroxine(T4),triiodothyronine(T3)wereestimatedusingcommerciallyavailablekitsandFreeT4indexwascalculated.Results:LeptinandT3levelsweresignificantlydecreasedandT4roseinthedepressedwomenascomparedtothehealthycontrols(P<0.05,P<0.001,andP<0.001respectively).Furthermore,theserumlevelofleptinwassignificantlylowerandT4wassignificantlyhigherinseverdepressedwomencomparedtomoderatelyormildlydepressedwomen(P<0.001andP<0.01,respectively).Conclusions:Thisstudyshowedthatthyroidandleptinhormonesmalfunctionindepressedwomen.Thus,inclusionofthyroidandleptinscreeningtestinthecaseofdeessedpatientsmightberequiredinpropermanagementschedules.
