Assessing Death Anxiety and its Correlates Among Severe Medically Ill in- Patients

【 摘 要 】

Introduction:Inspiteofthecertaintyofrealityofdeath,peopleseemunabletoescapeanxietyattheprospectofthem.Deathanxietycontributestoimportantemotionalandbehavioralconsequences.Theaimofthisstudyistoinvestigaterelationofdeathanxietywithvariablesuchasseverityofillness,depressionandreligiousbelief.PatientsandMethods:Thestudyisacross-sectional,descriptivestudy.Datawerecollectedusingdemographicquestionnaire,templardeathanxietyscale,beckdepressionquestionnaire,cumulativeillnessratingscaleandreligiousattitudequestionnaire.Thecorelationalandregressionanalysiswereconductedtoidentifythefactorsthatcorrelateandpredictthelevelofdeathanxietyrespectively.Result:Agroupofhundredandfiftypersonsincluding50severelyillpatients,50relativecaregiversand50normalhealthycontrolscompletedthequestionnaires.Deathanxietyscorewas7.2relatives,5.3inpatientsand4.4incontrolgroup.Depressionandseverityofillnesshadpositivecorrelationwithdeathanxietyinmedicalpatients(Plt;0.05).inadditiontothatreligiousbeliefhadnegativecorrelationwithdeathanxiety(Plt;0.05)andwasthestrongestprotectivefactorfordeathanxietyinpatientsgroup.Inrelativesandcontrolsdepressionpredictedmoredeathanxiety.Conclusion:IndividualssufferingfromSevermedicalillnessesdonotinevitablyexperiencemoredeathanxiety.Discussingtotherelativethefact,thelowdeathanxietyintheirrelativepatients,willpreservetherightofpatientstomakerationaldecisionabouttheirtreatmentandlife.Inpresenceofdeathanxietyearlydetectionandmanagementofdepressioncouldreducedeathanxiety.
