【 摘 要 】

Background:ConcernsonthesafetyofpoliovaccineinsomepartsofnorthernNigeriathatledtothesuspensionoftheimmunizationeffortsinthosepartsofthecountry,informedourdesignofthisprospectivestudy.Objective:Todeterminepolio-specificImmunoglobulinGantibodiesamongchildren(sevenmonths-sevenyears)inJos.Methods:WithinthemonthsofMarchandApril2007,OnehundredandeightytwobloodsampleswerecollectedfromchildrenintheEmergencyPeadiatricUnitoftheJosUniversityTeachingHospitalandtestedforthepresenceofpolio-specificIgGantibodiesusingPoliomyelitisIgGELISATestKitproducedanddescribedbyDEMEDITECDiagnosticGmbHGermanyResults:Onehundredandseventyeightpercent(97.8%)ofthetestedchildrenhaddetectableantibodiesagainstpoliovirus.Thestudypopulationhadappreciablelevelsofprotectionagainstpoliovirus.TherewasnosignificantassociationbetweenthedetectionoftheIgGinchildreninrelationtogender,age,religion,andnumberofdoses.Onlyeducationalstatusoffathershadstatisticallysignificantrelationshipwiththedetectionoftheantibodies.Conclusion:ThisstudydemonstratedthatprogresshasbeenmadetowardstheeradicationofpoliomyelitisinNigeria.Tofurtherstrengthenthegainsmadeandweakenthebarrierstoimmunization,thereisanincreasingneedformorefundingtoincreaseawarenessandintensifythefinaleffortstargetedat‘kickingpolio’outofNigeria.
