ThisstudyaimedtoinvestigateovarianandendocrineresponsesassociatedwithtreatmentofcysticovarieswithGnRH,PGF2α,and+/-Progesterone-CIDRplacement;andtodeterminepregnancyestablishmentfollowingsynchronizationandtimedartificialinseminationincowssufferingfromcysticovaries.Ovariancystsweretypedrectallyandultrasonographicallyintofollicular,luteinizedandpersistenttypes.Twoschedulesoftreatmentweredesigned,inSchedule-A,15cowswithfollicular(n=7),luteinized(n=3)andpersistent(n=5)cystswereused.Thecowsreceived2injectionsof100ugGnRH(9daysinterval)with25mgPGF2αadministered7daysafter1stGnRHdose.InSchedule-B,14cowswithfollicular(n=6),luteinized(n=3)andpersistent(n=5)cystswereused.ThecowsadministeredGnRHandCIDRconcurrently,then25mgPGF2α7dayslater.TheCIDRwasremoved2daysafterPGF2α.Cowswereinseminated16hoursafter2ndGnRHdose.Bloodsampleswerecollectedtoassayprogesteroneandestradiollevels.Inschedule-A,57.1%,33.3%and40%offollicular,luteinizedandpersistentcystswereovulatedafter1stGnRHinjection,whileatotalof100%,66.7%and100%wereovulatedafter2ndGnRHdose.Thecowswithfollicularcystsappearedthehighestrateofpregnancy(57.1%)followedbytheluteinizedandpersistentcysts(33.3%and40%).Ofatotal15cystic-treatedcows,7wereconfirmedpregnant(46.7%).Theconcentrationofprogesteronewassignificantly(P<0.05)higherat1stGnRHinjection,thendecreasedafterPGF2αinjectionandthenincreasedagainat7dayafterinsemination.Inschedule-B,after1stGnRHdose,66.7%offollicular,0%ofluteinizedcystsand80%ofpersistentwereovulated;witha57.1%totalovulationrate.FollowingCIDRremoval,85.7%(12/14)cowsovulatedtherecruitedfolliclesanddevelopedacorpusluteum.Ofatotal14cystic-treatedcows,8wereconfirmedpregnant(57.1%).PlasmaestradioldeclinedfollowingintravaginalplacementofCIDR,butmarkedlyincreasedonedayafterremoval.ProgesteronedecreasedafterCIDRremoval,butincreasedagainatpresenceofpalpablecorpusluteum.Thedevelopedcorpusluteumandpregnancyratewerehigherinschedule-B(+CIDR)thaninschedule-A(-CIDR).Inconclusion,treatmentofcowswithcysticovarieswithGnRHfollowedbyPGF2α7dayslaterresultedinrecruitmentofnewhealthyfollicles,synchronizationofovulationandamarkedpregnancyrate(withthanwithoutCIDR).
