Inafieldexperimentconductedin2005ndash;2007onlightsoil,medium-tallleafyfieldpea(PisumsativumL.)cultivarWiato(dryseedtype)andtallleafypeacultivarFidelia(greenforage/dryseedtype)weregrownintwo-speciesmixtureswithspringbarley(HordeumvulgareL.).Theaimoftheresearchwastoassesstheeffectofpartialseparationofthecomponentsintheintercroponbarley-peainteraction,canopylodging,biomassyieldandgrainproduction.Thespeciesweresowninintercropsusingseparatepassesoftheseederinthesamedirection,withpeaseededfirstinregularrowspacingof10.8cm.Thepartialspeciesseparationwasachievedthroughsowingbarleyinfourdifferentrowarrangementsintheintercrop:uniformrowspacingof10.8and21.6cm,andalternaterowspacingof10.8/32.4cmand10.8/43.2cm.Theintercropwithbarleyseededinrowsspaced10.8cmapartandthatwithalternaterowspacingof10.8/43.2cmyieldedthesamegrainduringtheexperimentalyears.Comparedtothose,themixturewithalternate10.8/32.4cmrowspacingofbarleyyieldedsignificantlylessgrainin2005and2006.
