Effects of Bikram Yoga on Body Composition, Blood Pressure, and Sleep Patterns in Adult Practitioners

【 摘 要 】

Studieshavedemonstratedpositiveresultsforpeoplewhopracticetraditionalyoga,specificallyinbodymassindex,depression,cancer,sleepingpatterns,anddiabetes.Mostformsoftraditionalyogaareheldinatemperateclimatebetween293Kelvin(K)to295K;atemperaturethatiscalmingandplaceslittlestressonthebody.Bikramyoga,however,isamoreintenseformofyogaperformedinahotterclimate,typicallyat314Kwith40%humidity.ThepurposeofthisstudywastodeterminehowBikramyogaaffectedbloodpressure,bodycomposition,andsleeppatternsinbeginnerandintermediate/experiencedpractitioners.Participants(N=16)completed8weeksofsessions,rangingbetween2to7classesperweekinalocalBikramyogaprogramconductedbycertifiedinstructors.Allparticipantswereassessedpriortothestudyandagainattheendoftheeightweeks.ABODPOD(anairdisplacementplethysmography)wasusedforbodycompositionassessments,whileadigitalbloodpressurecuffwasusedtoassessbloodpressure.Inaddition,participantswerealsosurveyedonsleepparameterspreandpostyogaparticipation.Incombiningallsubjects,resultsshowedtherewasasignificantimprovement(p=0.054)infastertimetofallasleep(27.66minpreand23.967minpost),andatrend(p=0.057)towardsimprovedmeanarterialpressure(92.20mmHgpreand88.33mmHgpost).Therewerenodifferencesinweightlossorpercentbodyfatinsubjects.Thisstudyindicatesthatthereisatrendtowardsimprovedbloodpressureandsignificantimprovementinsleepparametersafter8weeksofBikramyogaforbothintermediate/experiencedandbeginners,butnodifferencesinbodycomposition.
