【 摘 要 】

ThemegacityofKarachiisstillmainlydependentonconventionalsourcesofenergytocateritsdailyelectricityrequirements.Dependenceonconventionalsourcesofenergyforpowerproductionresultsinenvironmentaldegradationanddepletionoffossilfuelresources.Inparticular,italsohighlightsanimmenseneedofalternatesustainablesolutionforcurrentelectricitygenerationscenario.Inthisresearchwork,aninnovativemethodologyhasbeenproposedtoidentifybrightrooftopsusingopensourcegeographicinformationsystem(GIS)toolswhichmaybeutilizedforsustainablepowergenerationinKarachimetropolis.First,brightrooftopshavebeenextractedusingopensourceQuantumGIS(QGIS)software.Edgeextractiontechniqueusinggradientfilter;anopensourcealgorithmofQGIShasbeenutilized.Furthermore,imageprocessingtechniqueshavebeenusedtoextractandrefinebuildingrooftops.Then,rooftopshavebeenpolygonizedandtheirareahasbeencalculatedusingMeasureAreafunctionofQGIS.Toassesstheaccuracyoftheextractedrooftops,fieldvalidationworkhasbeenperformedandsamplerooftopshavebeenphysicallymeasured.Acomparisonofextractedandphysicallymeasuredsamplerooftopsyielded90.45%accuracy.Reductionintotalroofareahasbeenmadeconsideringdifferentroofusesandshadingeffectfromnearbytreesandbuildings.Then,unshadedbrightrooftopsareaof4,626m2hasbeencalculatedwhichcanbeusedforsolarphotovoltaic(PV)applicationsinCreekLanes,DHAPhase7Karachi.Anannualenergyoutputof2.1MWhhasbeenestimatedusingCrystallineSilicon(c-Si)solarPVpanelandavailablerooftoparea.Themethodologyadoptedcanbeextrapolatedtomacro-scaleaswell.However,challengesandlimitationsforextrapolationofmethodologyhavealsobeenhighlighted.SolarradiationstudiesthatdemonstratetheuseofopensourceGIStoolsforsustainablepowergenerationforthisregionhavebeenscarce.Thus,thisstudyisapreliminaryresearchworktohighlightanimmensesolarelectricitypotentialthatexistsforKarachimetropolis.
