“Calcispheres” as a source of lime mud and peloids – evidence from the early Middle Devonian of the Prague Basin, the Czech Republic

SeveraltypesofpeloidsarepresentintheLowerandMiddleDevonianlimestonesofthePragueBasin(uppermostpartoftheTřebotovLimestoneoftheDaleje-TřebotovFormationandChotečFormation,uppermostEmsian–Eifelian)andareinterpretedasbeingofcalcispheral,echinoderm,and/orcalcimicrobialorigin.Possiblemechanismsofpeloidformation,themodeoflifeofcalcispheresandtheirroleintheaccumulationofPaleozoiclimemudarediscussed.MassoccurrencesofpeloidsandcalcispheresarecharacteristicfeaturesoftheChotečFormation(Eifelian,costatus–kockelianusconodontzones).Itisconcludedthatspecificenvironmentalconditions,suchasahighernutrientload,existedduringthesedimentationofthisunit,probablyinresponsetotheBasalChotečevent.
