InvestigationsofLowerandMiddleOrdovicianbrachiopodsinnortheasternSpitsbergenhaverevealedstrongtiestofaunasinNorthAmericaandGreenlandatthegenericlevel,althoughthefaunaappearsmostlyendemicatthespecieslevel.DuringtheearlyPalaeozoic,thearchipelagoofSvalbard,includingSpitsbergen,waslocatedatequatoriallatitudesalongthenortheasternmarginofLaurentia.ThenortheasternpartofSpitsbergenexperiencedsignificantsealevelchanges,changingfromveryshallowwaterintheTremadociantodeepwaterintheFloianandslowlybacktoshallow-watercarbonateenvironmentsintheMiddleOrdovician.TheTremadocianandearlyFloianbrachiopodfaunawasoflowdiversitywithahighproportionofcosmopolitanwarm-waterrelatedrhynchonelliformgenera.InthelateFloiantherewasanabruptdiversificationevent,takingplaceagainstthebackgroundoftheincreasingisolationofLaurentia,leadingtoadiverse,mostlyendemicfauna.ThisdiversefaunaremainedintotheMiddleOrdovician.AsimilardiversificationeventhasbeenrecordedinNorthAmerica,buthereitoccurslater,intheDapingian.ThediachroneityofbrachiopoddiversificationwithindifferentpartsofacontinenthaspreviouslybeenshownforSouthChina,suggestingthatitmaybeacommonphenomenon.IncontrasttothemostlyendemicMiddleOrdovicianrhynchonelliformgenera,thelinguliformbrachiopodsincludedmanygenerawithawidedistribution.Thisdifferenceisattributedtotheirdifferentdispersalstrategies.
