Duringthelastfewyearsresearchonfossilbaleenwhalesexperiencedarenaissance.Severalimportantfossilsweredescribed,andnewandextendedcladisticanalyseswereperformed,partlyincludingmoleculardatafromlivingspecies.Despitetheprogressinourknowledgeoftheirphylogeny,manyquestionshavestillnotbeenresolved.Adifferentattempttoillustratemysticeterelationshipsispresentedhereusinglandmarkanalyses.Forthepresentanalysis,38dorsalviewsofmysticeteskullsandskullreconstructionswerescannedandthirteenlandmarksweredefined.Themethodusedistherelativewarpanalysis.Thismethodallowsaclusteringofelementsaccordingtotheirsimilarityinshape.Thecalculatedrelativewarpsexplainmainshapevariationsinthesample.Asinparsimonyanalysesthetoothedmysticetesareclearlydistinguishable.RepresentativesoftheAetocetoideaaregroupedverycloselytogetherandthereforetheirclassificationinthisfamilyisstronglysupported.TheperformedanalysisshowsthatthecraniaoftheBalaenidaehavedevelopedsimilaritiestothecraniumofJanjucetushunderi.TherestrictionoftheCetotheriidaetoasmallgroupoftaxaisconfirmedhereandincludesinthisanalysisCetotherium,Mixocetus,Piscobalaena,andTitanocetuswithacloserelationshiptothelivinggraywhale.Thestem-balaenopteridsdonotshowanyclearsignalsinthepresentanalysis.Thereisnosupportforasubdivisionintofurtherfamilies.ThestructureofthedorsalcraniumofProtororqualusandPraemegapteraisverysimilartothatofBalaenoptera
