RecentstudyoflateMiddleGivetiandeposits(upperMoscowFormation,TullyFormation,andlowermostGeneseeGroup)ineast-centralNewYorkState,hasrevealednew,moredetailedinformationconcerningthenatureandtimingofboththe“Taghanictransgression”andtheTaghanicbioeventsinthetyperegionofwest-centralNewYorkState.Thepresentresearchfocusesonforelandbasindetritalfacies,peripheraltotheclassicTullyLimestonesuccessioninwesternNewYork;wehavedocumentedmorecompleteandcomplexfaunal-faciessuccessionsessentialforcomparisontootherregions.Thesenewsectionsshowthatitispossibletoextendbed-by-bedcorrelationsoftypicalTullymarkerunitsawayfromthecarbonateplatformintobothbasinalandnearshoredetritaldeposits,wheresectionsaremorecomplete.Theresultinghigh-resolutionstratigraphicframeworkallowsbetterassessmentofthenatureandtimingofbioeventsnowrecognizedintheTaghanicintervalintheNewYorkandPennsylvaniaregion.ThispaperreviewsTaghanicbiofaciesandfocusesonreinterpretationoflowerTullydepositsasoutershelf-to-basinfaciesratherthaninnershelfor“lagoonal”faciesaspreviouslysuggested.ThepotentialrelationshipoftheTullyFaunatothepost-TaghanicIthacaFaunaisdiscussedbriefly.WealsodiscussthesefindingsinthecontextofrecentbiostratigraphicandgeophysicalworkbyotherswithintheTaghanictime-slice,particularly,inEuropeandMorocco.
