Background:Non-mutanslowpHoralstreptococciarepostulatedtocontributetocariesetiology.Objective:ThisstudywasundertakentoinvestigatewhethertheacidogenicityandacidtoleranceofclinicalstrainsofStreptococcusoralisandStreptococcusmitiscorrelatewithhealthorearly-stageenamelcaries.Design:S.oralisandS.mitiswereisolatedfromplaquesamplestakenfromtheocclusalsurfacesofsecondmolarssampledattwodifferentvisits4yearsapart.AllsitesweresoundatVisit1;subjectsweresegregatedintooneofthreegroupsbasedonthestatusofthesiteatVisit2andcarieselsewhereinthedentition.StrainsofS.oralisandS.mitiswereevaluatedforacidogenicityandacidtolerance,andtheresultscorrelatedwiththeclinicalstatusofthesitesfromwhichtheywereisolated.Mutansstreptococci(MS)isolatedfromtheplaquesampleswerealsoquantified,andthepresenceorabsenceofgrowthonpH5.5mediaoronmediaselectiveforbifidobacteriawasrecorded.Results:NosignificantpositivecorrelationswerefoundbetweentheacidogenicitypropertiesoftheS.oralisandS.mitisclonesandcariesateithervisit.SimilarresultswereobtainedforacidtoleranceofS.oralisclonesbutwereinconclusiveforS.mitisclones.AstatisticallysignificantpositivecorrelationbetweenMSlevelsandcaries(orfuturecaries)wasevidentatbothvisits,buttherewerenostatisticalcorrelationswiththegrowthonpH5.5mediaormediaselectiveforbifidobacteria.Conclusions:ThelowpHpotentiallikelyvariesconsiderablyamongoralstreptococcalspeciesandisleastlikelytobefoundamongstrainsofS.mitis.Accordingly,theconceptandconstitutionof‘lowpHstreptococci’mayneedtobere-evaluated.Keywords:dentalplaque;mutansstreptococci;cariogenicity;oralmicrobiota;acidogenicity;acidtolerance(Published:26October2016)Citation:JournalofOralMicrobiology2016,8:32940-http://dx.doi.org/10.3402/jom.v8.32940
