【 摘 要 】

Genesaretransferredbetweenbacteriaindentalplaquebytransduction,conjugation,andtransformation.Membranevesiclescanalsoprovideamechanismforhorizontalgenetransfer.DNAtransferisconsideredbacterialsex,butthetransferisnotparalleltoprocessesthatweassociatewithsexinhigherorganisms.Severalexamplesofbacterialgenetransferintheoralcavityaregiveninthisreview.Howfrequentlythisoccursindentalplaqueisnotclear,butevidencesuggeststhatitaffectsanumberofthemajorgenerapresent.Ithasbeenestimatedthatnewsequencesingenomesestablishedthroughhorizontalgenetransfercanconstituteupto30%ofbacterialgenomes.Genetransfercanbebothinter-andintrageneric,anditcanalsoaffecttransientorganisms.ThetransferredDNAcanbeintegratedorrecombinedintherecipient’schromosomeorremainasanextrachromosomalinheritableelement.Thiscanmakedentalplaqueareservoirforantimicrobialresistancegenes.TheabilitytotransferDNAisimportantforbacteria,makingthembetteradaptedtotheharshenvironmentofthehumanmouth,andpromotingtheirsurvival,virulence,andpathogenicity.Keywords:bacteria;bacterialsex;DNAtransfer;dentalplaque(Published:3June2013)Citation:JournalofOralMicrobiology2013,5:20736-http://dx.doi.org/10.3402/jom.v5i0.20736*TheChiefEditorIngarOlsen,hasnothadanypartinthereviewanddecisionprocessforthispaper.
