【 摘 要 】

Therehasbeenaparadigmshifttowardsanecologicalandmicrobialcommunity-basedapproachtounderstandingoraldiseases.Thishassignificantimplicationsforapproachestotherapyandhasraisedthepossibilityofdevelopingnovelstrategiesthroughmanipulationoftheresidentoralmicrobiotaandmodulationofhostimmuneresponses.Theincreasedpopularityofusingprobioticbacteriaand/orprebioticsupplementstoimprovegastrointestinalhealthhaspromptedinterestintheutilityofthisapproachfororalapplications.Evidencenowsuggeststhatprobioticsmayfunctionnotonlybydirectinhibitionof,orenhancedcompetitionwith,pathogenicmicro-organisms,butalsobymoresubtlemechanismsincludingmodulationofthemucosalimmunesystem.Similarly,prebioticscouldpromotethegrowthofbeneficialmicro-organismsthatcomprisepartoftheresidentmicrobiota.Theevidencefortheuseofproorprebioticsforthepreventionofcariesorperiodontaldiseasesisreviewed,andissuesthatcouldarisefromtheiruse,aswellasquestionsthatstillneedtobeanswered,areraised.Acompleteunderstandingofthebroadecologicalchangesinducedinthemouthbyprobioticsorprebioticswillbeessentialtoassesstheirlong-termconsequencesfororalhealthanddisease.Keywords:periodontaldiseases;caries;probiotics;prebiotics(Published: 1May 2009)Citation:JournalofOralMicrobiology2009.DOI:10.3402/jom.v1i0.1949
