Messinian rodents from Moncucco Torinese, NW Italy: palaeobiodiversity and biochronology

TherodentsfromtheUpperMessiniandepositsofMoncuccoTorinese(MCC)(Piedmont,NWItaly)aredescribed.StratigraphicconsiderationsindicatethatthefossiliferousdepositsexposedatMCCdatebacktothepost-evaporiticphaseoftheMessinianSalinityCrisis(5.40–5.33Ma).ThirteenrodenttaxabelongingtothefamiliesCricetidaeFischer,1817,MuridaeIlliger,1811,GliridaeThomas,1897andSciuridaeFischer,1817arerecognizedbasedon1177teeth.TheoccurrenceofCentralomysbenericettii(DeGiuli,1989),Paraethomysmeini(Michaux,1969)andApodemusgudrunavandeWeerd,1976allowstocompareMCCwithotherlatestMessinianlocalitiesofnorthernItaly,suchasBrisighellaandVerduno.Therodentassemblagesdescribedhereinand,moreparticularly,thetaxaA.gudrunae,MuscardinusviretiHugueneyamp;Mein,1965andGliruluslissiensisHugueneyamp;Mein,1965,suggestthatMCCcanbereferredtotheLateTurolian(MN13).Moreover,thepresenceoftaxacommonlyfoundinPliocenelocalitiesofwesternandcentralEurope(OccitanomysbrailloniMichaux,1969,MicromysbendaivandeWeerd,1979,Neocricetodonmagnus(Fahlbusch,1969)andSciuruswarthaeSulimski,1964)indicatesthatsometypicalRuscinianelementswerealreadypresentattheendoftheMioceneatleastinsouthern-centralEurope.TherodentassemblagesofMCCalsoincludeApodemusatavusHeller,1936,Eliomysaff.intermediusFriant,1953,GlisminorKowalski,1956,andPliopetauristapliocaenica(Depéret,1897).Overall,thefossilassemblagesdocumentedinthispaperremarkablyexpandourknowledgeontheLateMiocenerodentcommunitiesofItaly,alsoprovidingusefuldatafortheinterpretationofbiogeographicrelationshipsbetweenwesternandeasternEuropeattheendoftheMessinian.
