Basedonthemorphologyoftheapertureandinternalplaitsorfolds,theNerineoideaZittel,1873aresubdividedintosevenfamilies:thePseudonerineidaePchelintsev,1965,CeritellidaeWenz,1940,NerinellidaePchelintsev,1960,Eunerineidaen.fam.(newfamilythatincludestheNerineidaeZittel,1873(pars)andtheDiptyxidaeBouchetamp;Rocroi,2005)thePtygmatididaePchelintsev,1960,NerineidaeandItieriidaeCossmann,1896.TheinternalplaitsoftheNerineoideahaddifferentfunctions:thecolumellarplaitssubdividedthecolumellarmuscleintostrands,whichallowedportionsofthefoottobemovedindividually.Atubelikespacedelimitedbytheparietalandpalatalplaitsiscomparedwiththepallialcaecumorposteriormantlechamberofheterobranchsandservedtherespiration.Wastefrombothmantlechamberswasexpelledthroughasubsuturalnotch,whichisthecommonfeatureoftheNerineoidea.TheNerineoideawereshelldraggersandprobablydepositfeederswithasemi-infaunalmodeoflife.The“LowerHeterobranchia”representedbytheStreptacidoideaKnight,1931,NerineoideaandActeonelloideaAkopjan,1976clusteroutsidetheEuthyneuraKnight,1931.TheActeonelloidea,thesecondgroupoflargeHeterobranchiaarerelatedtotheNerineoideaandcannotbepartoftheActeonoidea.TheextinctionoftheEunerineidaen.fam.,thePtygmatididaeandCeritellidaeintheLateCenomanianwascausedbyageneralwarminginlowlatitudes.TheActeonellidaegenusTrochactaeonMeek,1863replacedtheextinctEunerineidaen.fam.ecologicallyinshallowmarinesoft-bottomenvironmentsandbecameextinctitselfintheLowerCampanianduetothegeneralcooling.IntheCaribbeanpalaeobiologicalprovince,theendemicNerineoideagenusPlesioptygmatisBoese,1906extendedstratigraphicallytothebasalLateMaastrichtian.Acteonellad'Orbigny,1842andtheendemicActeonellidaegenusMexicotrochactaeonAkopjan,1972rangedupwardsintotheLateMaastrichtian.
