BrachiopodsfromtheUpperOligocene(Chattian),AquitaineBasin,southwesternFrancecompriseninespeciesinsevengenera:NovocraniaLeeamp;Brunton,2001,Terebratulinad'Orbigny,1847,Megathirisd'Orbigny,1847,ArgyrothecaDall,1900,JoaniaÁlvarez,Bruntonamp;Long,2008,MegerliaKing,1850,andLacazellaMunier-Chalmas,1880.Onemegathyrididisdescribedasanewspecies,Joaniapeyrerensisn.sp.,characterizedbyornamentationof6–8distinct,sharpribsandbytriangular,plate-liketeeth.WiththeexceptionofMegathirisdetruncata(Gmelin,1791)andLacazellamediterranea(Risso,1826),allspeciesarerecordedforthefirsttimefromtheOligoceneoftheAquitaineBasin.IntaxonomiccompositionthisbrachiopodfaunadisplayscloseaffinitywiththeMiocenefaunasoftheMediterraneanProvinceandCentralParatethys.ThedominanceofmicromorphicmegathyrididsandthecideidesinthePeyrèreassemblage,characteristicofcryptichabitatssuggeststhepresenceofsubmarinecavesand/orcrevices,thussupportingthepreviousinterpretationsofthisfaunisticassemblageasacavebiocenosis.Frequencyofgastropoddrillingsobservedontheinvestigatedbrachiopodsislow(4%)asisinmostCenozoicbrachiopodpopulations.Thepaleotemperaturescalculatedfromtheδ18Ovaluesofbrachiopodshells(21to24°C)correspondwelltoapaleoenvironmentalinterpretationbasedonpaleoecologyofothertaxonomicgroups.
