DisarticulatedfossilremainsofasameindeterminateperciformhavebeendescribedinNeogenedepositsfromAfrica,inLibya(UpperMioceneofSahabi)andinNamibia(MiddleMioceneofArrisdrift),andthenfromGermany(LowerMioceneofLangenau).Foundinassociationwithstrictlyordominantlyfreshwaterfaunas,theyweresupposedtobefreshwaterfish.However,theirdistributionwasratherdifficulttointerpretandtheircomparisonwithfreshwaterichthyotaxadidnotpermittoattributethemneithertoaknowngenusevennortoaknownfamily.Bycomparisonwithmarineperciforms,thereviewoftheAfricanfossilsallowedustoattributethemtothegenusArgyrosomus(Teleostei,Sciaenidae)or“Meagre”.Onlynewfossilmaterialandanacutestudyoftheosteologyofextantspeciesmightallowspecificattributionofthisbonymaterial.TheseAfricanfossilsandthosefromLangenauconstitutethewholebonyfossilrecordofthegenusArgyrosomusDeLaPylaie,1835thatisalsoknownbyotolithsfromEuropeanMiocenedeposits(MediterraneanandParatethyanseas).Thesemarinefish,todaypresentalongEuropeanandAfrican(andalsoAsianandWestPacific)coasts,havecertainmembersthatfrequentlyenterestuariesandcoastalfreshwaterstreams.So,ouridentificationofdisarticulatedbonyremainscompletesthefossilrecordofArgyrosomus.ItallowsustodatetheirpresencealongtheAfricanWestcoastsinceatleasttheMiddleMioceneanditindicatesthattheiraffinitywithfreshwaterexistedyetintheLowerMiocene.
