ThesmallMahakambyIsland(=IslandoftheShrimp)islocatedintheMozambiqueChannel(IndianOcean)alongthenorthwesterncoastoftheMahajangaProvince,(SoalalaDistrict,NWMadagascar).MioceneoutcropsofMahakambywereexaminedduringtheexpeditionsoftwonaturalistsfromtheMuséumnationald'Histoirenaturelle,Paris:thefirstbyPerrierdelaBâthiein1915andthesecondbyWaterlotin1922.AmongthefossilinvertebratescollectedduringtheWaterlot'sMission,somedecapodcrustaceanswerepartiallyreportedbyCollignonamp;Cottreau(1927)buttheirspecimensarenowadaysalmostcompletelylost.However,additionalmaterielcollectedbyWaterlotwasrediscoveredinthepalaeontologicalcollectionsoftheParisMuseum.Itallowsareviewandadiscussionofthecrustaceansamplespreviouslystudiedonthebasisoficonographicmaterial.Moreover,newspecimensofbrachyurans,collectedduringtheWaterlotmission,arehereassignedforthefirsttimetoPortuninaeRafinesque,1815.
