【 摘 要 】

AcollectionoffishscalesfromtheLaMesetaFormation(Paleogene,Eocene;SeymourIsland,Antarctica)hasbeenstudied,permittingthecharacterisationoffiveclearlydistinguishablemorphotypes.Threemorphotypesarecomparabletoscalesofrecenttrachichthyids,clupeids,andgadids.Theothertwomorphotypesarerepresentedonlybytwopoorlypreservedspecimens;however,theyprobablypertaintoperciformandpleuronectiformfishes.ThelatterisanewrecordfortheLaMesetaFormation.Themixedcompositionofthefishscaleassemblagereflectssubstantialredistributionoffishremainswithinahigh-energy,shallowmarineenvironment.Scaleswererecoveredfromcalcareoussandstoneconcretions,whichaccountsfortheiroverallgoodpreservation.ThisisthemostdiversifiedassemblageoffishscalesyetreportedfromthefossilrecordofAntarctica.
