In1817,DesmaresterectedEryoncuvieri,anewcrustaceanfromtheLateJurassicofBavaria(southernGermany).Later,thesametaxonwasdescribedasMacrouritesarctiformisbyvonSchlotheim(1820).Subsequently,numerousauthors,probablyunawareofDesmarest'sfirstpaper,referredtothistaxonasEryonarctiformis(vonSchlotheim,1820).FollowingthePrincipleofPriority,theoriginalnamemustbeusedandMacrouritesarctiformisvonSchlotheim,1820ishereconsideredtobeamorerecent,subjectivesynonym.Moreover,twospecimensofthetypeseriesofEryoncuvieriDesmarest,1817,fromFaujasdeSaint-Fond'sCabinetofNaturalHistory,haverecentlybeentracedintheCollectiondeGéologieoftheMuséumnationald'Histoirenaturelle,Paris.Alectotypeishereindesignated.
