Basedonsimplephysicalandgeometricassumptions,wehavecalculatedthemeansurfacemoleculardensityofspiralgalaxiesatthethresholdbetweenstarformationinducedbycloud-cloudcollisionandspontaneousgravitationalcollapse.Thecalculatedthresholdisapproximately$$logSigma_mathrm{crit}sim2.5$$,where$$Sigma;[{{{M}_{odot}}},mathrm{pc}^{-2}]$$istheobservedsurfacemassdensityofanassumedflatgasdisk.Abovethislimit,therateofmolecularcloudcollisionsdominatesoverspontaneousmolecularcloudcollapse.ThismodelmayexplaintheapparentdiscontinuityintheSchmidtlawfoundrecentlyat$$2lesssimlogSigmalesssim3$$.
