TheX-rayspectrumofthedistantQSOPKS0237–233(z=2.223)hasbeenstudiedwithASCAandROSAT.Thespectrumintheenergyrange0.1keVto8keVintheobserver'sframeiswellfittedbyapower-lawmodelwithaphotonindexof1.54±0.06absorbedbythegalacticinterstellarmatter.Thelackofexcessabsorptionconfirmsthatsuchabsorptionisnotauniversalpropertyofthehigh-redshiftGHz-peakedspectrum(GPS)sources.FromacomparisonoftheLymanalphaandthemetalabsorptionlinesintheopticalandUVbands,smallamountofX-rayabsorptionconstrainstheionizationstateofthemetallinesystematz=1.65as[HI/H]gt;2.5×10−4and[CIV/C]gt;0.11ifthemetallinesystemshaveametalabundanceof0.1Z⊙.
