BasedonASCAobservationsMushotzkyetal.(1996,ApJ466,686)haverecentlyderivedtherelativeabundanceratiosofα-elementstoiron,[α/Fe]≃0.2–0.3,forfourrichclusters,andhavesuggestedthattheoriginofmetalsinanintra-clustermedium(ICM)isnotatype-Iasupernovae(SNIa),butatype-IIsupernovae(SNII).However,theseauthorsusedthesolarphotosphericironabundanceforASCAdatareduction,whilethemeteoriticironabundanceisusuallyadoptedinchemical-evolutionstudies.Itistruethatalthoughthephotosphericandmeteoriticsolarabundancesareconsistentformostoftheelements,aseriousdiscrepancyisknowntoexistforiron;indeed,thephotosphericabundanceofironisNFe/NH=4.68·10−5bynumber,whilethemeteoriticvalueis3.24·10−5.TheargumentconcerningtherelativerolesofSNIaandSNIIinICMenrichmentisquitesensitivetotheprecisevaluesof[α/Fe],andoneshoulduseanidenticalsolarironabundanceindatareductionaswellasintheoreticalarguments.Wethereforeadoptthemeteoriticironabundance,whichisconsistentwithchemical-evolutionstudies,andshiftMushotzkyetal.'sASCAdatabyΔ[α/Fe]≃−0.16dex.Bycomparingthecorrected[α/Fe]valueswiththeoreticalnucleosynthesisprescriptionsofSNIaandSNII,wereachaconclusionthatanSNIaironcontributionof50%orhigherintheICMenrichmentcouldnotberuledout,andmightindeedbefavoredbasedontheASCAspectra.
