Wepresentthenear-infraredobservationofthezodiacallightwiththeIRTS(InfraredTelescopeinSpace),asmallcryogenicallycooledorbitalinfraredtelescope.Theobservedspectraoftheskybrightnessatwavelengthsfrom1.4μmto4.0μmarecharacterizedbyasmoothstellar-likespectrumatwavelengthsshorterthan3.2μm,andenhancedemissionatthelongwavelengths,whichisattributedtothermalemissionfrominterplanetarydust(IPD).Themeasuredskybrightnesshasacleardependenceontheeclipticlatitude,implyingthatthezodiacallightisadominantemissioncomponentofthenear-infraredsky.Thespectrumofthezodiacallight,itself,wasobtainedbysubtractingotheremissioncomponents.Althoughitisfairlyclosetothesolarspectrumatwavelengthsbetween1.8and3.2μm,itclearlyshowsadecrementinthescatteringefficiencyattheshort-wavelengthend.Thezodiacallightat1.4–3.2μmisabouttwiceasbrightasthatextrapolatedfromopticalmeasurements.Theseresultsindicatethatlargedustisresponsibleforthenear-infraredzodiacallight;theyalsosuggestthattheIPDthathasaspectralreflectancesimilartotheS-typeasteroidscouldberesponsibleforthenear-infraredzodiacallight.
