Ascidiansaresimpleinvertebratechordateswhoselineagedivergedfromthatofvertebratesatthebaseofthechordatetree.Theirlarvaedisplayatypicalchordatebodyplan,butarecomposedofaremarkablysmallnumberofcells.Ascidiansdevelopwithaninvariantcelllineage,andtheirembryoscanbeeasilyexperimentallymanipulatedduringthecleavagestages.Theirlarvalnervoussystemisorganisedinasimilarwayasinvertebratesbutiscomposedoflessthan130neuronesandaround230glialcells.Thisremarkablesimplicityoffersanopportunitytounderstand,atthecellularandmolecularlevels,theontogenyandfunctionofeachneuralcell.Here,wefirstreviewtheorganisationoftheascidiannervoussystemanditslineage.Wethenfocusonthecurrentunderstandingoftheprocessesofneuralspecificationandpatterningbeforeandduringgastrulation.Wediscusstheseadvancesinthecontextofwhatiscurrentlyknowninvertebrates.
