Apoptosisisamajorpartofthenormaldevelopmentofmanyorgansystemsandtissues.Thezebrafish(Daniorerio)hasbecomeausefulmodelforstudyingearlydevelopment,andrecentadvancesintechniquesusedtolabelapoptoticcellshavemadeitpossibletovisualizeapoptoticcellsinthismodelsystem.Wehaveusedtheinsituterminaldeoxynucleotidyltransferase(TdT)-mediateddUTPnick-endlabeling(TUNEL)todescribethetemporalandspatialdistributionofapoptoticcellsduringnormaldevelopmentofthezebrafishembryofrom12to96hpostfertilization.Bycountinglabeledapoptoticcells,wehavedemonstratedtransienthighratesofcelldeathinvariousstructuresduringdevelopment,andwehavecorrelatedthesepeakswithpreviouslydescribeddevelopmentalchangesinthesestructures.Ouranalysishasfocusedonthenervoussystemandassociatedsensoryorgansincludingtheolfactoryorgan,retina,lens,cornea,oticvesicle,laterallineorgans,andRohon–Beardneurons.Apoptosisisalsodescribedinothernon-neuralstructuressuchasthenotochord,somites,muscle,tailbud,andfins.
