【 摘 要 】
Sensorynervesplayavitalroleinmaintainingcornealtransparency.Theyoriginateinthetrigeminalganglion,whichisderivedfromtwoembryoniccellpopulations(cranialneuralcrestandectodermalplacode).Nonetheless,itisunclearwhethercornealnervesarisefromneuralcrest,fromplacode,orfromboth.Quail–chickchimerasandspecies-specificantibodiesallowedtracingquail-derivedneuralcrestorplacodecellsduringtrigeminalganglionandcornealdevelopment,andafterablationofeitherneuralcrestorplacode.Neuralcrestchimerasshowedquailnucleiintheproximalpartofthetrigeminalganglion,andquailnervesinthepericornealnerveringandinthecornea.Insharpcontrast,placodechimerasshowedquailnucleiinthedistalpartofthetrigeminalganglion,butnoquailnervesinthecorneaorinthepericornealnervering.Quailplacode-derivednerveswerepresent,however,intheeyelids.Neuralcrestablationbetweenstages8and9resultedindiminishedtrigeminalgangliaandabsenceofcornealinnervation.Ablationofplacodeafterstage11resultedinlossoftheophthalmicbranchofthetrigeminalganglionandreducedcornealinnervation.Noninnervatedcorneasstillbecametransparent.Theseresultsindicateforthefirsttimethatalthoughbothneuralcrestandplacodecontributetothetrigeminalganglion,cornealinnervationisentirelyneuralcrest-derived.Nonetheless,propercornealinnervationrequirespresenceofbothcelltypesintheembryonictrigeminalganglion.Also,completelackofinnervationhasnodiscernibleeffectondevelopmentofcornealtransparencyorcelldensities.
