Tobetterunderstandthetopologicalorganizationoftheprimordiawithintheanteriorforebrain,wemadeafatemapoftherostralneuralplateinthechick.Homotopicgraftsatthefour-somitestagewereallowedtosurviveforupto9daystoenableananalysisofdefinitivebrainstructures.Insomecases,thetopographyofthegraftedneuroepitheliawascomparedwithgeneexpressionpatterns.Themidpointoftheanteriorneuralridgemapsupontheanteriorcommissureintheclosedneuraltube,continuingconcentricallyintothepreopticareaandopticfield.Non-neuralepitheliumjustinfrontofthismedianridgegivesrisetotheadenohypophysis.Areasforthepresumptivepallialcommissure,septum,andprosencephalicchoroidaltissuelieprogressivelymoreposteriorlyalongtheridge,peripheraltothetelencephalicentopeduncularandstriatopallidalprimordia(thesubpallium),andthepallium(olfactorybulb,dorsalventricularridge,andcorticaldomains).Subpallialstructureslietopologicallyanteriortothepallialformations,andbothareconcentrictotheseptum.Withinthepallium,themajorcorticaldomains(Wulstandcaudolateral,parahippocampal,andhippocampalcortices)appearposteriortothedorsalventricularridge.Theamygdaloidregionappearsconcentricallyacrossboththesubpallialandpallialregions.Thisfatemapshowsthatthearrangementoftheprospectiveprimordiaintheneuralplateisbasicallyaflattenedrepresentationoftopologicalrelationshipspresentinthematurebrain,thoughmarkedphenomenaofdifferentialgrowthandselectivetangentialmigrationofsomecellpopulationscomplicatethehistogeneticconstitutionofthematuretelencephalon.
