Severalstudiessuggestfibroblastgrowthfactorreceptor3(FGFR3)playsaroleinthedevelopmentoftheauditoryepitheliuminmammals.WeundertookastudyofFGFR3inthedevelopingandmaturechickeninnerearandduringregenerationofthisepitheliumtodeterminewhetherFGFR3showsasimilarpatternofexpressioninbirds.FGFR3mRNAishighlyexpressedinmostsupportcellsinthematurechickbasilarpapillabutnotinvestibularorgansofthechick.Thegeneisexpressedearlyinthedevelopmentofthebasilarpapilla.Gentamicintreatmentsufficienttodestroyhaircellsinthebasilarpapillacausesarapid,transientdownregulationofFGFR3mRNAintheregionofdamage.Intheinitialstagesofhaircellregeneration,thesupportcellsthatreenterthemitoticcycleinthebasilarpapilladonotexpressdetectablelevelsofFGFR3mRNA.However,oncethehaircellshaveregeneratedinthisregion,thelevelsofFGFR3mRNAandproteinexpressionrapidlyreturntoapproximatethoseintheundamagedepithelium.TheseresultsindicatethatFGFR3expressionchangesafterdrug-inducedhaircelldamagetothebasilarpapillainanoppositewaytothatfoundinthemammaliancochleaandmaybeinvolvedinregulatingtheproliferationofsupportcells.
