【 摘 要 】

Developmentofglandularorganssuchasthekidney,lung,andprostateinvolvestheprocessofbranchingmorphogenesis.Thedevelopingorganbeginsasanepithelialbudthatinvadesthesurroundingmesenchyme,projectingdividingepithelialcordsortubesawayfromthesiteofinitiation.Thisisatightlyregulatedprocessthatrequirescomplexepithelial–mesenchymalinteractions,resultinginathree-dimensionaltreelikestructure.Weproposethatactivinsarekeygrowthanddifferentiationfactorsduringthisprocess.Thepurposeofthisreviewistoexaminethedirect,indirect,andcorrelativelinesofevidencetosupportthishypothesis.Theexpressionofactivinsisreviewedtogetherwiththeeffectofactivinsandfollistatinsinthedevelopmentofbranchedorgans.Wedemonstratethatactivinhasbothnegativeandpositiveeffectsoncellgrowthduringbranchingmorphogenesis,highlightingthecomplexnatureofactivinintheregulationofproliferationanddifferentiation.Weproposepotentialmechanismsforthewayinwhichactivinsmodifybranchingandaddresstheissueofwhetheractivinisaregulatorofbranchingmorphogenesis.
