Scholarsagreethatchangesinvegetationhavebeeninfluencingpopulationsizesofground-foragingsongbirdsinDutchdunegrasslands.Duetoalackofknowledgeconcerningthebreedingbiologyofthesespecies,themechanismslinkingvegetationchangeandpopulationdevelopmentremainunclear.Here,Idescribethebreedingbiologyofthreeco-occurringinsectivoresinDutchdunegrasslands:MeadowPipitAnthuspratensis,EuropeanStonechatSaxicolatorquatusandNorthernWheatearOenantheoenanthe.ThenestlingdietofMeadowPipitscontainedmanydipterans,suchascraneflies(Tipulidae),butalmostnobeetlesandrelativelyfewnoctuidcaterpillars,whereasbeetlesandnoctuidlarvaewereimportantinthedietsofbothEuropeanStonechatandNorthernWheatearnestlings.MeanbroodsizewassmallestinMeadowPipitandequalinEuropeanStonechatandNorthernWheatear.Nestdepredationwassimilarlyhighintheopen-nestingMeadowPipitandEuropeanStonechat,resultinginlowernestsuccesscomparedtoNorthernWheatear,acavity-breeder.ProvisioningratepernestlingwashighestinNorthernWheatear,thelargestspecies,withnoobserveddifferencesbetweenMeadowPipitandEuropeanStonechat,whichresultedinhigherperbroodprovisioningratesforEuropeanStonechat.SincethemeanbroodsizeofEuropeanStonechatislargerthanthatofMeadowPipit,andsincenestdepredationgenerallyincreaseswithprovisioningrates,onewouldexpectahigherdepredationrateinEuropeanStonechat.ThissuggeststhatdifferencesinnestsiteselectionbetweenMeadowPipitandEuropeanStonechatresultinrelativelylowernestdepredationratesinEuropeanStonechatandsimilarnestsuccesstoMeadowPipit.Isuggestthatfutureworkshouldfocusonhowdifferentvegetationtypesrelatetopreyabundance,foraginghabitatandvegetation-specificnestdepredation,inordertobetterunderstandtheputativerelationshipsbetweenpopulationgrowthandvegetationincoastaldunegrasslands.
