【 摘 要 】

Edgeeffectsonnestingsuccesshavebeendocumentedinbreedingbirdsinavarietyofcontexts,butthereisstilluncertaintyinhowedgetypeandspatialscaledeterminethemagnitudeanddetectabilityofedgeeffects.Habitatedgesareoftenviewedaspredatorcorridorsthatsurroundorpenetratecorehabitatandincreasetheriskofpredationfornearbynests.Westudiedtheeffectsofthreedifferenttypesofpotentialpredatorcorridors(mainperimeterroads,fieldboundaries,andATVtrailswithinfields)onwaterfowlnestsurvivalinCalifornia.Wemeasuredthedistancefromduckneststothenearestedgeofeachtype,anduseddistanceasacovariateinalogisticexposureanalysisofnestsurvival.Wefoundonlyweakevidenceforedgeeffectsduetopredation.Thebestsupportedmodelofnestsurvivalincludedallthreedistancecategories,andwhileallcoefficientestimateswerepositive(indicatingthatsurvivalincreasedwithdistancefromedge),85%coefficientconfidenceintervalsapproachedorboundedzeroindicatinganoverallweakeffectofhabitatedgesonnestsuccess.Wesuggestthatgiventheconfigurationofedgesatoursite,theremaybefewareasfarenoughfromhardedgestobeconsidered‘core’habitat,makingedgeeffectsonnestsurvivalparticularlydifficulttodetect.
