Biparentalincubationisacommonpatternofparentalcareinbirds.Withinspecieswithbiparentalincubation,thecontributionofeachsexcanvarywidely.Manystudieshaveaddressedthefactorsthatinfluencevariationinfemaleincubationbehaviour,buttheunderlyingcausesofwithin-speciesvariationinmaleincubationbehaviourremainpoorlyunderstood.InthispaperweanalyseincubationbehaviourintheReedWarbler,asmall,predominantlysociallymonogamouspasserinenestinginreedbeds.Weexaminedtheimpactoftimeofday,weatherconditions(ambienttemperature,windspeed,rainfall)andprogressofthebreedingseasononmaleandfemaleincubationbehaviourin81pairsofReedWarblerbreedingintheBaryczValley(SWPoland).Wefoundthatfemaleshadonaveragehighernestattentiveness(totaltimespentincubatingperhour)thantheirpartners(47%vs.29%)butmeanincubationboutlength(asingle,uninterruptedstayatthenest)didnotdiffersignificantlybetweenthesexes(9minvs.7min).Thetwoparentsrespondeddifferentlytochangingenvironmentalparameters.Femalenestattentivenesswasunaffectedbydate,timeoftheday,advancementofincubationandweatherconditions,whilemalesspentmoretimeonthenestathigherwindspeedsandlowertemperatures.Incontrast,maleincubationboutlengthwasnotaffectedbythesefactors,whereasfemaleboutlengthincreasedthroughoutthebreedingseasonandwaslongeratlowertemperatures.Incubationrecesses(periodswherebothparentswereoffthenest)werelongerduringfavourableweatherconditions(athightemperaturesandlowwind),probablybecausecoolingoftheeggstakesmuchlongerundersuchconditionsandparentscanspendmoretimeforaging.Acomparisonofourresultswiththosefromotherpopulationsrevealedimportantbetweenpopulationandsex-specificdifferencesinnestattentivenessexpressedasthepercentageofmale/femaletimespentonthenest.Wesuggestthatbetweenpopulationvariationmayresultfromdifferencesinhabitatqualityand/orfoodresourcesaffectingthenecessityofmalecontributiontoparentalcare,variationinbreedingsynchronyanddensitiesinfluencingmaleengagementinextra-paircopulations,differencesinpredationlevels,ormethodologicaldifferences.
