Competitionmayoccurwhentwospecieswithsimilarfeedingecologiesexploitthesamelimitedresourcesintimeandspace.Inrecentyears,theEasternTundraBeanGooseAnserfabalisserrirostrisandGreaterWhite-frontedGooseAnseralbifronsfrontalishaveincreasedinwinteringnumbersatShengjinLake,China.Toexaminethepotentialforcoexistenceandpossibleavoidancestrategies,westudied(1)theirhabitatuse,(2)foragingbehavioursand(3)dietsofbirdsforaginginmixed-andsingle-speciesflocks.Bothspeciesextensivelyexploitedsedgemeadows,wheretheyshowedconsiderableoverlapinspatialdistributionanddiet.Thepercentagefeedingtimeanddietofbothspecieswereunaffectedbythepresenceoftheother.GreaterWhite-frontedGeeseappeareddiurnalsedgemeadowspecialists,almostneverfeedinginotherhabitats.EasternTundraBeanGeesewerelessselective,exploitingotherhabitats,whichtheyincreasinglyexploitedatnightinmid-winter.Theuseofalternativehabitatsandnightfeedingmayhaveavoidedinterspecificcompetition.WhilethespecialisedfeedingecologyofGreaterWhite-frontedGeesemaymakethemparticularlyvulnerabletolossofsedgemeadowhabitat,EasternTundraBeanGeesemaybeabletoadjustbecauseoftheiruseofalternativehabitatsandalessrestricteddiet.
