Predationisamajorcauseofbreedingfailureinbirdspecieswithopennests.Althoughmanystudieshaveinvestigatednestpredationrates,directidentificationofnestpredatorsissporadic,especiallyin(semi-)naturalhabitats.WequantifiednestsuccessandidentifiednestpredatorsinapopulationofSkylarksAlaudaarvensisandWoodlarksLullulaarboreabreedinginaprotectedsemi-naturalareadominatedbyheathlandanddifferentsuccessionstatesofgrasslandonnutrient-poorsoilinTheNetherlands.Wemonitored54nestsbymeansofcontinuousvideosurveillancetodeterminesurvivaltimesandpredators,andmonitoredanother44nestswithoutacamera.Fatesofthe58(40)Skylark(Woodlark)nestswere:fledging41(27),depredation13(12),eggdesertion1(0)andnestlingdeath3(1).Theoverallnestsuccessofallmonitorednests(58(40),Mayfieldestimate)was33%(22%;allmortalityfactorsconsidered)or43%(25%;onlydepredation).PredatorsofSkylarknestswereRedFoxVulpesvulpes(5),CarrionCrowCorvuscorone(1)andEuropeanAdderViperaberus(1).WoodlarknestsweredepredatedbyCarrionCrow(2),EurasianJayGarrulusglandarius(1)andRedFox(1).Resultssuggestthatthemainnestpredatorsmightdifferbetweenthetwoco-occurringlarkspecies;SkylarknestslocatedinmoreopensiteswerepreyeduponmainlybyRedFox,whilethemainpredatorsofWoodlarknests,locatedgenerallyclosertotrees,arecorvids.
