IcelandhasalargeresidentpopulationofPurpleSandpipersCalidrismaritima,butisalsobelievedtobeawinteringareaforotherpopulationsandisastopoversiteformigrants.TodeterminethewinteringareasofthosethatprepareforwestwardmigrationtotheNearcticinspring,PurpleSandpiperswerecolour-ringedonthecoastofsouthwestIcelandinMay2003and2005.Wesearchedforcolour-ringedbirdsalongthecoastsofIceland,theEuropeanmainlandandBritain,particularlyinwinter2005/06.Outof326markedbirds,82werere-sightedduring2003to2009,ofwhich69wereseenduringwinter(OctobertoMarch)2005/06.Mostsightings(55)inwinter2005/06werefromsouthwestIceland,extendingtheknownwinterrangeofthispopulationtoIceland.ResightingsfromnorthernScotlandconfirmedtheevidencefrombiometricsthatthiswinteringpopulationoriginatesfromtheNearctic.Themaximumnumberofcolour-markedPurpleSandpipersinBritainandIrelandinwinter2005/06wasestimatedatabout65,whichwasapproximatelyaquarterofthemarkedsampleestimatedtobealive.Therefore,themajorityofthecolour-ringedbirdsmusthavewinteredelsewhere,mostlikelyinIceland.TherewasnoevidenceofsexualsegregationaccordingtowhethertheywinteredinIcelandorBritain.However,thosethatwerecolour-ringedbefore15MayweremorelikelytobeseeninIcelandthaninBritain,whereasthosecolour-ringedafter15MayweremorelikelytobeseeninBritain,indicatingthatthemigrationfromBritaintakesplacemainlyaftermid-May.Althoughtherehavebeennoringingrecoveries,biometrydatasuggestthatPurpleSandpipersthatprepareforwestwardmigrationinIcelandinspring,breedinCanada.ThispopulationshowsauniquewinterrangeforawaderthatincludesGreenland,IcelandandnorthwestEuropealongtheEastAtlanticflyway.
